It is a great privilege for the Yuwaya Ngarra-li team at UNSW to support the strong leadership and vision of Aboriginal community controlled organisations in Walgett. During recent COVID lockdowns, the Dharriwaa Elders Group (DEG) turned their skills to co-ordinating supplies of food, water and PPE locally, delivering emergency household supplies to isolating household and checking in on Elders who were housebound. The Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service led an excellent local response to testing and vaccinating the community, while the DEG supported these efforts through critical public health messaging.
